The authors of One Year One Night by S.L. Roman have revealed the key photo behind the story of the unlucky boy who was evacuated to Egham in Surrey in 1940.

The photo from the original local newspaper shows the devastation on the high street shop which killed 3 children including unlucky Ken.

Authors Sarah and Laura writing under a nom de plume used this tragic shot to build a whole new fiction tracing the unfortunate life of Ken from Brighton who became Ben – evacuated to the made-up village of Millside.

A witness in Egham shouted at the men shown in the picture and told them to save the children but Health and Safety rules prevailed.
