How Londoners coped with bombing in WW2 – research for the next YA novel by SL Roman.

Leicester Square tube station in WW2 – permission applied for.

Lots of the research for our second young adult novel deals with the violence and horror of war. But we spotted one display in London which was a bit different. Many organisations put on displays this summer of what they did in WW2, inspired by Victory in Europe day or VE day when the 80th anniversary of the end of the conflict was marked.

It’s well known that Londoners sheltered in the tube to avoid the nightly bombing by the Luftwaffe and many of the archive photos show people crowded into makeshift beds in dark and dirty underground stations. But at Leicester Square tube station there’s an example of resilient city-dwellers benefitting from an organised approach where in 1941 – bedding was stored and numbered ahead of the night hours.

It’s another example of our own research using a variety of sources, ranging from journalism, photos, websites and oral history.

Novel # 2 is underway with many of our popular characters including our heroine Annie.
