Red Chair Press, which is based outside of Boston in New England, is praised for producing kids’ favourite series. It started in 2009 and has published 300 books.
These include One Year One Night by SL Roman which is the penname for Sarah Onions and Laura Meloni Bywaters.
Sarah and Laura’s first Young Adult Novel is described as a charming historical fiction story – ‘told through a young girl’s diary entries and has been highly reviewed’.
‘The emotions and love story have timeless appeal’.
The writers have worked hard to develop their sense of historical fiction drawing on Laura’s research skills. She achieved a 1st class degree from Rome University with magna cum laude. They’ve both enjoyed exploring WW2 and its natural sense of drama. Their research has been extensive and has included visits to the Imperial War Museum and plenty of research online starting from the BBC’s People’s War. Their first port of call was Egham Museum in Surrey in Southern England where the original unlucky boy in the novel was evacuated and the central event happened. There the authors were able to look at a newspaper from the day of the boy’s death and to talk to an elderly man who was an actual witness. Sarah also interviewed a member of the original boy’s family.
Recently they took OYON to young readers with a talk at the prestigious Tiffin Girls’ School in S W London.
The writers took in depth questions from year 9 girls, many of whom had a deep understanding of the historical period.
For the first time they sold books through a school. A few days later they took the story back to its heart – Strode’s Sixth Form College in Egham in Surrey where the story surfaced.
