The sweet spot of our second wartime historical romance.
Co-authors SL Roman spent a week on a recent writer’s
retreat and wrote 20 several new pages and included new
characters in the work-in-progress novel.
And they made use of one storyline which has been
threatening to get lost – more than a year after they first
came up with it.
The extraordinary story of the bombing of a sugar
warehouse in London’s docks was quite a tale. The
Germans bombed it on Black Saturday, 7 September in
1940 when the Blitz started.
The factory stored 45 thousand tonnes of sugar but under
fire it reached boiling point and poured out over the walls,
hitting the street and the river Thames. The fireman tried to
tackle it but their boots stuck to the sticky mess. It turned
into toffee and the local kids grabbed spoons, scraped and
ate it despite the fact that it was dirty and covered in
soot.
The children got the belly ache and – in our story, the dirty toffee ran into
and blocked the sewers causing a serious health hazard.
The event filled a hole in SL Roman’s second novel where
they are writing about some of the same characters as in
One Year One Night including or our heroine Annie.
The writers otherwise known as Laura Meloni and |Sarah
Onions had much more time on the writer’s retreat and
were able to catch up with their writing and make sure that
all their inventive ideas were placed on the pages.
